Highland Hightops were made during Greenwood’s 2016 residency at Handmadelife’s Project Space at Queen Victoria Market.
The title is a reference to the Scottish ancestry of Emma’s father, her perennial love of tartan, and the style of the classic hightop basketball boot.
Material inspiration came in the form of an op-shop pencil case filed away in Greenwood’s ‘textile library’. From humble origins the pencil case has been transformed, framed by leather in the side panels, ankle collar and tongue detail.
Greenwood’s ongoing intent utilises traditional techniques to elevate athletic footwear from a mass-produced, disposable product, to a highly personalised, precious, handcrafted one, thereby respecting and honouring the origins of shoemaking.
