Polyhymnia (Muse of sacred poetry and songs)
15 x 8 x 14cm
Polyhymnia (Muse of sacred poetry and songs) is one within a group of nine bronze sculptures made representing the Nine Muses from Greek Mythology. Each of the nine bronzes references a specific Muse. As a result they have their own unique attributes and are intended to stand on their own as individual pieces as well as sit together as a group.
This body of work is an examination of the writings of the 5th Century B.C. poet and musician, Sappho, alongside personal readings of mythology, most notably that of the Nine Muses.
Polyhymnia (Muse of sacred poetry and songs), references Ashanti gold work from Africa, the repetition of symbolic motifs being a marker of sacred ritual. The motifs, increased in scale, become the ‘entrance’ to the implied temple form within this work, a suggested site for the creation of sacred poetry and songs.
