Marcel (Young Warrior)
ceramic, slab construction, sgraffito underglaze
11.5 x 7 x 19.5cm
The importance of functional ceramic wares as cultural and historical artefacts documenting the breadth of human existence and utility continue to provide inspiration for new creations in modern times. The handbuilt vase, Marcel (Young Warrior) stands playful but strong, presenting a formal stance, with facial features simplified to their most basic representation. Contrasting black line and sgraffito patterns are used to embellish the white clay form and reference ancient but enduring tribal motifs.
