Fragments of Landscape by contemporary ceramicist Jill Symes is an exhibition of undulating clay slab sculptures inspired by the richness and beauty of the Australian terrain. The works will be installed in the window galleries at the Gallery at Bayside Arts and Cultural Centre in Brighton, Victoria. Expressing the artist’s deep connection to earth and nature – enriched by a life of travels in outback, bush and coastal areas - including Port Phillip Bay where the she lives - these works suggest remnants of vessels “torn from the earth”. They are deconstructed forms with abstractly painted surface layers, evocative of monumental ancient landscapes containing quiet places for refuge. Symes’s tactile ceramic sculptures demonstrate hand-building skills that embody the accumulated expertise of more than forty years of ceramic practice and exemplify the exciting possibilities of earthenware clays and glazing techniques.
