Swatch the Future presented by RMIT

  • online at (map)

This project involved forecasting the future and imagining a world that is different from the current political, economic or environmental climate. Fourteen emerging designers set the scene, and identified a design problem within a potential apocalypse and came up with textile design solutions. These new worlds have taken the form of: the settlement of other planets, living in total darkness, feminist utopias, radioactive wastelands, dystopian war zones, a world where textiles are scarce, the end of technology, worlds with nomadic farming subcultures, worlds where the only surviving crops are hallucinogenic plants, futures overrun by plagues, or where food and textiles are merged so that both come from the same resources. Identifying potential problems within these worlds, the designers have used knitting, weaving, surface design, stitching, felting, embroidery and a range of other experimental and innovative textile techniques and materials to develop solutions.
