Craft Victoria and Pieces Of Eight Gallery proudly present Kate Rohde.
Kate Rohde presents new vessels loosely inspired by heirloom vegetables including rainbow chard, kohlrabi and the many varieties of pumpkins and tomatoes. The interest in these fruits and vegetables stems from a realisation of the many spectacular colours and forms these rarer varieties encompass, and that historically have informed many classic silhouettes in the decorative arts such as the double gourd shaped vessels common in Chinese ceramics.
Exhibited in the window of Pieces of Eight Gallery, Kate creates a homely, domestic inspired setting to display her pieces. The installation speaks to the beginning of her practice through to the present day and her mastery of resin as a material.
‘I’ve always loved really crazy, excessive detailing in art and design, which in some ways has always seemed at odds with what we now consider good taste.
My artwork and functional pieces are jointly inspired by an intersecting love of natural history and the ornate decorative arts spanning several eras, including perhaps most notably the Rococo era.’
