Best Practice is the first in our Craft to Consumer series. It’s an overview designed for makers who are just beginning to sell their work or thinking about how to make their practice and budding business consumer friendly.
Speakers include Jenny Brown from Melbournalia, furniture maker and woodworker Damien Wright, and jeweller and ceramicist Abby Seymour.
This session will cover the essentials for understanding the retail world. These are the benchmarks and foundations for getting your craft objects to market in a professional manner.
Damien Wright and Abby Seymour are two successful craftspeople who will provide insights into their own perspectives, experience, priorities and methods when it comes to balancing the craft and the business sides of their practice. They come together for an informal mini-panel conversation to shed light on best practice.
Jenny Brown runs the store Melbournalia on Bourke St Hill. She retails the work of lots of local makers and has savvy experience on wholesale relationships and the nuances of product development.
Together with these two experienced makers and someone from the selling side of the counter, we will go through the basics of:
- Product development
- Market research
- Establishing an online presence
- Developing and maintaining relationships with your retailers
- GST, ABNs and PLI
- Pricing and wholesaling
- Packaging and paperwork
