dana harris: memento

  • Craft 31 Flinders Lane Melbourne, VIC, 3000 Australia

Committed to extensive research of specific sites, dana harris creates work that poetically interprets contextual and conceptual complexity. Her work makes unanticipated but distinct connections between disparate stimuli and forms of information, creating highly refined, hand crafted works that are evidence of particular social, cultural and artistic links.

The work dana creates is hand crafted, beginning with a single thread. Using self taught techniques to knit, bind, crochet, macramé or sew the thread, she traces these impressions and memories and a transformation of the record becomes apparent. Interested in creating works that provoke questions, she utilizes elements of both 2 and 3 D, macro and micro space, object and shadow. Some of her work can take years to complete. and while not deliberate,  it could be seen as a reaction to the fast, easy-to-access information digital age she is making it in.

Based in Melbourne, dana studied at art schools in Sydney and Auckland. She has travelled extensively to Europe, the US and Asia, living in Tokyo for almost three years from 1992. She studied Ikebana at the avant-garde Sogetsu school. The principles of craft design and discipline she learnt there continue to inform her art practice today. In 2014 dana undertook a residency at Youkobo Artspace in Tokyo, and in 2016 she was shortlisted in the Basil Sellers Art Prize at the Ian Potter Museum of Art.
