2015 Fresh Winner and ceramicist Alison Frith returns to Craft with a new body of work, exploring her signature volcanic glazes. One of the final students to graduate from Holmesglen’s Diploma of Ceramics, Frith is already well known for her treatments of clay and surface. In Surfacing, her minimal and controlled wheel thrown forms are met with unconventional glazes which bubble and break over the surface of vessels. The chance interactions of clay, glaze and kiln bring unpredictability to her precision making in which Frith questions our relationships to object and the subversion of utilitarian function. This relationship between control and unpredictability is something which Frith sites as an essential part of her practice.
