Every year, crowds gather to Treasury Gardens for a family-friendly day of music, dance and culture, with performances by some of the country’s most talented Indigenous artists.
Presented by Songlines - Australia’s peak body for Aboriginal music - Share the Spirit, or Balit Narrun, is Victoria’s longest-running Aboriginal music festival and an all-inclusive celebration of the culture of Indigenous people from all over the country.
Drop in Weaving Workshop with Yorta Yorta and Wathaurong weaver Donna Blackall. Donna is a Yorta Yorta and Wathaurong artist, currently living in Ballarat on Wathaurong country. Originally taught to weave as a young girl, Donna rekindled her love of weaving when she participated in a workshop with master weaver Bronwyn Razem (Gunditijmara). Donna uses a blanket stitch as it is a strong, sturdy stitch that creates baskets that are both practical and beautiful. She uses NZ Flax in her baskets, which she collects from her local area. Although NZ Flax is not indigenous to Australia, it is strong and wide, making it perfect for Donn’as style of weaving.
“As a proud Aboriginal woman, I believe the more we learn about our Indigenous ancestors in Australia, the more we can help people understand the country that we live on and the importance of maintaining a sustainable way of life for all Australians, and the future generations to come.” - Donna Blackall.
