BEGINNING AS A COLLABORATION BETWEEN award winning Gunditjmara and Torres Strait Islander artist LISA WAUP, DESIGNER INGRID VERNER AND CURATOR SARAH WESTON, This COLLECTION WAS FIRST SHOWCASED AS PART of the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival, Global Indigenous Runway and NGV Design wee. embodYING Waup’s graphic visual and woven artwork, THE GARMENTS EXPLORE themes of connection, identity and country.
Four original works by Waup – Homeward Boundaries, Land Mapping, Family Circles and Protection were drawn upon to build the series, linking the immediacy of their visual narrative with Waup’s practice and personal history as an artist. Fusing art and fashion, the collection draws from a strong tradition of language and symbol with colours drawn in combination from Waup’s monochromatic line work and the reds and greens of the Australian landscape.
Beginning with the documentation of Waup’s journal in December of last year, and continuing through to the selection and translation of print and the silhouette of each garment, the collection embodies the collaborative processes led by Waup with co-designer Ingrid Verner and curator Sarah Weston.
Fabric remnants from the collection have been hand woven by Waup to create a connected series of woven neckpieces, translating the softness of the garments and their bold prints into layered works which reflect on the linking of the body and adornment.
As part of the collection and shaped by the significance of family, Craft invited Lisa’s daughter and artist Kaiit Waup to create a series of pieces which responded to the garments in the collection. Rendered in free-from silver and set with seeds, kangaroo teeth and shells the pieces are both organic and precise.
