Amelia Dowling is a Melbourne based textile artist who has been making and exhibiting since 2009. Dowling utilizes found materials and re-purposes vintage garments. She juxtaposes traditionally 'ladylike' silhouettes and decadent materials with obscure and subversive details and embroidered text, which are contextualized by their emotive and humorous titles. Her works play with notions of vulnerability, femininity and sexuality while exploring personal dealings with sexism, anxiety, anger, heartbreak, grief and emotional labour. The works embody an attempt to be simultaneously tender and tough in the modern world, operating as both expressions of vulnerability and emotional armour.
