Melbourne maker and educator, Jane Sawyer, is known for her ceramics where the role of function in her objects is as equally considered as the conceptual underpinning by research and enquiry. Guided by the power of the object to engage the body through the sense of touch, fluidity and gesture, Sawyer’s objects invite new ways of ‘seeing’. The Murray River, evoking childhood experiences, has long been an important muse. Sawyer chooses to work within a simplified material set to enable a deep and naturally evolving exploration. She exhibits nationally and internationally and is an elected member of the International Academy or Ceramics and a board member of the World Crafts Council - Australia and of Craft Victoria. A committed educator, she is the founding director of Slow Clay Centre, Melbourne. Sawyer’s practice works toward exhibitions and welcomes limited edition series and bespoke commissions.
