Melbourne ceramicist Eva Giannoulidis is owner and operator of Ceramica Mechanica: an artist-run warehouse studio, gallery and store that was once a grease-ridden mechanic’s workshop located in the city’s inner north-west.

Eva’s approach to ceramics can be likened to the practice of a baker preparing bread: the fleshy wrestle with the clay medium is an essential part of the work’s inception. The transformation of clay from dry rock, to slip-like sludge, to loaf of earth precedes its shaping into a sensible and often utilitarian vessel.

Drawing inspiration from the aliveness of plants, Eva’s art practice involves wheel throwing, hand-building and colourist painting techniques. Rich pastel colours and textures are evident in Eva’s distinctive ceramics.

From functional food-safe vessels to ornamental, one-of-a-kind artworks, Ceramica Mechanica prides itself on offering sustainable and beautiful locally-produced work, along with private pottery lessons, short courses, group bookings and special event pottery parties.
