Narrative to Object will introduce workshop participants to design thinking concepts and a brief history of handicrafts in a feminist context. This workshop will present participants with examples of narratives expressed through handicrafts using both historical and contemporary practitioners. Together we will explore and identify the visual languages and symbolism within selected works. Using these examples as case studies, participants will be guided through design-thinking concepts through a series of quick and fun activities to learn techniques and tactics to develop their own visual language. Participants will then use their developed language to interpret and translate their own narrative into an object. Workshop participants will be working on their own project while engaging in collaboration. Making supplies and afternoon tea will be provided. Accompanying the workshop will be an exhibition of works by Hilary McAllister and Amy Kreitals, sculptural textile pieces translating narratives into spatial installations. These work epitomise the concepts explored through the workshop.
