Quirky Characters Celebrate Melbourne Food

A wonderful winter exhibition for all ages explores the Melbourne epicurean landscape through the eyes of a small and (epi)curious duck.

The whimsical creations of artists Cat Rabbit and Isobel Knowles are being brought to life in a new exhibition at Craft Victoria from 13 July to 17 August.

See You in the Soup is a short film in which a cast of feathered friends share an urban food adventure. The animation puppets, storyboards and props used to create the film will be on show as part of the exhibition.

A spaghetti forest, dumpling bean bags and a crepe tent are some of the soft sculptural elements included in the installation which invites young and old to consider their culinary comfort zones.

See You in the Soup is the latest collaboration between Isobel Knowles, an award-winning artist and animator, and Cat Rabbit, one of Australia’s most loved textile artists. Together they make books for children, short films and large-scale interactive artworks. They have published two books together, Owl Know How (2012) and Too Much for Turtle (2015).

Director of Craft Victoria, Bryony Nainby, is looking forward to seeing the responses from audiences as they explore the playful exhibition.

“The whimsical fuzzy felt characters, magical locations and heart-warming stories created by Cat Rabbit and Isobel Knowles have won them thousands of fans in recent years.

“Set in Melbourne, this beautiful tale of urban birds exploring the city’s eclectic food offerings and trying new foods will entertain visitors of all ages.

“Visitors will be delighted by the behind the scenes insights into making a stop-motion film and be charmed by the cast of quirky characters on display,” Ms Nainby said.

As part of See You in the Soup Craft Victoria will be presenting a series of public activities including a fun felt-making workshop with the artists, a talk by the artists about the exhibition, and a “Meet & Eat” mini tour of local fun food experiences. Details about the exhibition and the events are available at craft.org.au/in-the-soup

See You in the Soup will run from 13 July to 17 August at Craft Victoria, Watson Place (off Flinders Lane) Melbourne.

This project is supported by the City of Melbourne Arts Grants Program. See You in the Soup forms part of the Craft Cubed Festival. Craft Cubed is supported by the City of Melbourne Triennial Arts Grants Program.
