ARTIST STATEMENT
This weft faced wool and cotton tapestry was designed by Melbourne artist Sangeeta Sandrasegar and woven by Sue Batten at the Australian Tapestry Workshop (ATW) using the traditional handmade Gobelin technique. This tapestry was made with sustainable Australian Eco-Wool and cotton dyed in house by our specialist yarn dyer.   The design is formed by weft (horizontal threads) which are tightly packed to cover the warp (vertical threads) and is woven on an upright loom. Each colour, wound on its own bobbin, works only across its own section of the design and weft threads seldom pass completely from one side of the work to the other. Hundreds of bobbins may hang from a tapestry during the weaving process at any one time. Collaboration between artist and weaver exists throughout the duration of the interpretation of the design. This tapestry took 454 hours to weave.   Sangeeta Sandrasegar’s design was created in response to the concept of multiple identities emerging out a colonial and indigenous past and what a future Commonwealth should examine for these countries. The artist states:  “Our ties to one another exist both in the past and present – whether looking towards England or to the mutual ties of colonisation in all the various splendour and darkness and local interpretation this is the legacy that connects our common wealths. But looking towards the future and towards sustained relationships we cannot see past the sea that has brought us all together. The oceans have tied us to one another for centuries through early trade, conquests, war, peace times; they have been rich and abundant. This design looks to move forward positively as interconnected nations with commonality to look towards our natural environments of land and sea and allow for creation and improvement upon these contemporary situations of pollutants – plastics, oil spills, ghost nets etc and create once more a harmony with the seas just as we strive for harmony within our nations.”
