slip cast terracotta, copper sheet and rod, LED light source, rubber feet
63 x 18 x 18cm
Designed and made as part of a sustainable lighting exhibition.
Terracotta is work horse of the ceramics industry and yet it has a reputation as a cheap and lowly material lacking in strength and sophistication. It has for me a wonderful richness and warmth well suited to more technical challenges, particularly through slip casting techniques. Like copper it also colours the light with its warm red hue. Here cast rings are simply stacked to produce a column through which the light escapes, locked together by the twin copper rods running down each side.
