Print CIty and Craft present artist Stephanie Hicks.
Here, the window is considered simultaneously as a mirror, a barrier, and a portal. It reflects back the street outside, the quotidian and oft-overlooked features of the landscape. It delineates exterior and interior worlds. It draws us in. Through its relationship to photography, collage offers an imaginative means of navigating these worlds by making sense, and nonsense, of the wealth of images we are presented with in our daily lives. The printed image offers a stand-in or facsimile. Together they become an echo or reverberation of a world glimpsed, but not grasped, such that the wonderful becomes familiar and the familiar, wonderful.
Stephanie Hicks is a Melbourne-based visual artist working across collage, drawing, artist’s books and installation. The collection and arrangement of photographic images is central to her creative practice. Stephanie draws on her immediate environment for inspiration, habitually documenting incidental moments and encounters throughout her day. Images from vintage books and journals, found photographs, stickers and ephemera are also incorporated into a personal archive in which meaning is articulated though the use of formal qualities such as patterning, repetition and symmetry.
