We invite you to take this opportunity to learn about this traditional craft from some of Australia’s top weavers.
A group of Yolngu women from Mapuru, Arnhem land, are coming to Melbourne and will be running a workshop to share this beautiful art form.
Join us for two days (with an introductory evening prior), sitting in a weaving circle with a small group of people, in a natural outdoor setting. Be guided by expert tutors from Mapuru to weave baskets using pandanas dyed with natural colours from plants.
The Yolngu way of learning is by observing, watching and then doing. We welcome you to come prepared with an open mind to learn these weaving techniques in the way that they are passed down through the Yolngu people based on their cultural practices and methods of teaching. Please note that English is a third, fourth or fifth language for some of the weavers.
Friday 8th March 5.00 – 7.30 pm. Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th March 10.00 – 4.30 pm
(Friday evening – meet your teachers, weaving introduction and Welcome to Country followed by 2 full days of weaving)
