2016 Fresh! Winner Alison Frith returns to Craft with a new body of work exploring her signature volcanic glazes. One of the final students to graduate from Holmesglen’s Diploma of Ceramics in 2015, Frith is already well known for her treatments of clay and surface. In Surfacing, unconventional glazes bubble and break over minimalist forms. Chance interactions of clay, glaze and kiln bring an element of unpredictability to her precision making – allowing Frith fluidity in her final pieces. Her choice of glaze and form, is part of a broader questioning in her practice where she explores our relationship to objects and to function. The balance between control and unpredictability in her work is something which she sites as a critical part of her practice.
