Learn the techniques to craft a unique clay and cotton work of art for your wall.
In this special collaboration class join Maggie May from Middle Aisle and Aliça from Rara Studio to learn Macrame and Ceramic Handbuilding. Combine these two interesting and beautiful skills and add a little magic to your world.
In the first half of this class Maggie May will guide you through fundamental beginner macrame techniques to build an elegant macrame plant hanger. Macrame is a wonderful craft for meditation and mindfulness, it allows you to relax and let your creative ideas out into the world. Macrame might seem complicated at first glance but when explained by Maggie May you'll soon find yourself knotting with confidence and ease.
In the second half of this class Aliça will bring out terracotta clay and show you how to transform it into beads, charms and a terracotta plant pot that will sit beautifully in your macrame plant hanger! You will learn different hand-building techniques like pinching, slabbing and mark making.
Maggie May will demonstrate how to attach your ceramic treasures and your finished pieces will be fired for you, and ready for collection at Think Thornbury or posted to if you require (for the price of postage).
From cotton to clay, never fear if you think you are lacking in creativity or the necessary skills to achieve the class outcome, Maggie May and Aliça will be at hand to help you every step of the way. Both experts in their respective areas, they are also experienced teachers and passionate about creating a supportive and fun environment to explore and try your hand at this beautiful creative project.
Who is Aliça?
Aliça runs RARA Studio (@hellorarastudio), a Melbourne-based ceramics business. She makes unique, hand-built objects for the home and to wear.
Aliça has a background in fine art and has a love for natural materials and objects, especially the look and feel of handmade work. She originally studied ceramics with a Japanese ceramicist but is primarily self-taught. Each piece she makes is one of a kind, with the marks of the maker celebrated, forming the texture of the work.
She sells her ceramics online, with stockists across Australia and overseas. You can also find her at markets like Big Design Market and the Melbourne Ceramics Market. Her work has been featured in Frankie, Yen and Country Style Magazine. Aliça works locally from her studio in Thornbury, with her three studio helpers, Teti (dog), Claudia and Sybil (cats).
Who is The Middle Aisle?
Maggie May is a master Macramé artist, graphic designer, and stylist for her business, The Middle Aisle. She is passionate about working with Australian made materials and supporting local makers and craftspeople.
After discovering Macrame she immediately fell in love with the craft because of Macrame’s versatility for expression and creativity. Maggie creates modern ‘improvised’ macrame pieces inspired by Melbourne and her life.
She regularly posts on her Instagram @middleaisle about her life and being creative in Melbourne. Maggie works from her studio in Thornbury with her baby Remy, Dog (Sylvia) and Cats (Mina & Kansas).
Maggie is also one-half of the creative duo behind 'Think Thornbury'
