Come to our Open day and share our love of spinning natural fibres. Try out our spindles and wheels and make luscious yarn. Spinning with natural fibres is an ancient craft that is deeply embedded in many cultures. The process of forming a yarn by spinning is creative, practical and a type of meditation which links us back to our ancestors. All stages of creating a beautiful yarn from the fibres of a raw fleece will be demonstrated at our Open Day. It’s easy to learn and we will have our spindles, spinning wheels and fibre ready for people to try this ancient craft.

Handcarved Wooden Spoons Presented by Pip Haydon

Open Studio at Shirl the She Shed.

Down a side red brick and bark path is my small but mighty wood workshop, Shirl the She Shed.

Drop in, I’ll be at the messy bench making something wooden spoony. I might be axing out a spoon blank from a green wood branch, carving a spoon bowl with a hook knife or putting the last coat of oil on The River Red Gum Project Spoons. There are heaps of special spoon makers tools to see and map drawers full of finished spoons to sift through. “Shirl the Shed” where hand carving turns timber prunings, storm falls, and offcuts, into spoons to cook, serve up and eat your dinner with.

One Wound / One Repair - Deborah Prior

02_Australian Tapestry Workshop_03Image.jpg

The Australian Tapestry Workshop is delighted to host Artist in Residence Deborah Prior and the creation of her new collaborative textile artwork ‘One Wound / One Repair’ as part of the 2019 Craft Cubed festival.

Prior will work on-site at the ATW, transforming vintage woollen blankets into new textile artworks. Functional, symbolic and emotive, blankets share an intimate relationship to the body – signalling our vulnerable states of sleep and illness, and ultimately reflecting our own mortality through their marking, staining and wear and tear. They can be a site of respite and safety, but also speak of the burden of domestic care: Unseen, undervalued work still borne mostly by women.

Participants are invited to help Prior in the making of “One Wound / One Repair” by participating in a cyclical stitching project of care and connectivity. You will be asked to repair a small woollen hole (‘wound’) in a blanket left by a previous participant, using your choice of salvaged fabrics collected by the artist and yarns from the ATW. You will then cut your own hole in the blanket, safe in the knowledge that a future visitor will repair this for you.

Every participant will also be gifted a small votive object to take home with them that has been knitted by the artist and embellished with one the woollen wounds the community has excised from the blanket.

This project is both a meditation on the vulnerabilities of the body, and a reflection on how everyday domestic and emotional labour might be devotional acts of care worthy of far greater cultural recognition.

Drop-in welcome.

stateofeden_hakeasquare_craftcubed.jpg

Hidden Beauty explores our bond with the natural environment and how we can benefit from a more conscious observation of this connection. Gasworks Arts Park resident artist Rebecca Garfield, is opening her studio to present work that pays homage to our living world and the relationship that we have with it. The studio is nestled within 5 hectares of the secret garden in Albert Park that is Gasworks Arts Park; and will display natural objects, imagery and flora that influence her work from concept sketches to completed pieces. After enjoying the studio space, visitors are encouraged to explore the beautiful surrounds of Gasworks Arts Parks for their own natural objects; or can use items already in the studio to experiment with their interpretations of our natural environment. This is a journey of self discovery so watercolour paints, pencils and oil pastels will be available to play with this discovery; and Rebecca will be on hand to guide your individual process. No skills are required to participate, just an appetite for exploration and creativity!

Delicious food and coffee are available from Priscilla Jones Cafe located within the park, and exhibition spaces located within the main venue will be open as well. Hidden Beauty Open Studio will be taking place at the Showcase Studio located opposite the cafe. All Gasworks venues are wheelchair accessible and Service dogs are welcome.
