Window Walk | John Brooks & Audrey Tan X Kuwaii
John Brooks has a background in textiles after studying at RMIT, and Audrey Tan studied jewellery at Melbourne Polytechnic, both meeting at Monash studying Fine Art (honours) in 2014. Merging our conceptual training with the technical skill built up through our practical training in craft mediums, a link formed between our practices and our disciplines. Working through the connections we have to our textiles and jewellery, and attributes we project onto them, we see these objects as talismans, or charms.
The potential of objects to aid our mental well being is explored through a series of material combinations incorporating textiles and jewellery. Manifestations of positive experiences are integrated with the aim of prolonging or savouring a good feeling. On the other hand, material representations of frustration are destroyed and embedded into sculptures– symbolic objects have been broken down and reconfigured through a cathartic ritual process. Tangible traces from daily life have been hoarded because of the belief that in the right combination they might be a potent charm for bringing luck or warding off negativity. Arrangements of lucky and unlucky objects form a collaborative conversation about self-diagnosing and self-healing. The placebo effect of ritual acts as a kind of medicine – maybe the act is more healing than the outcome.
Merging both discarded or recycled materials (for instance: oyster shells from a luxe dining experience, the ashes of thoughtful gift, hand-carved wasp nest) and aspirational materials (fine silk, precious gems, keshi pearls), a series of charm-like objects will be created collaboratively, and intended for suspension in a window, preferably with some floor space for a rug-like object. The work will be installed at Kuwaii, in the Cathedral Arcade, in a considered way that plays with negative space to achieve visual balance.
